There comes a time… Abril 15, 2007

Archivado en: De todo un poco, Frases — Aidich @ 9:46 pm

Mr. Linderman: I think there comes a time when a man has to ask himself whether he wants a life of happiness, or a life of meaning.

Nathan Petrelli: I’d like to have both.

Mr. Linderman: Haha… can’t be done. Too very different paths. I mean, to be truly happy, a man must live absolutely in the present, no thought of what’s gone before, and no thought of what lies ahead. But, a life of meaning, a man is condemned to wallow in the past and obsess about the future. And my guess is that you’ve done quite a bit of obsessing about yours these last few days.

(18th chapter of the series “Heroes“)

.
Well, I guess it was about time I wrote something in English. It’s been ages since the last time I did, and it scares me I might end up forgetting everything. After all those years studying, it would be a shame, wouldn’t it. And then I wouldn’t be able to go on showing off!

As for the quote (the dialogue actually), I must say that (apart from the fact that I love it), if someone asked me the same question, my answer would also be “both”. But yet, I agree, it’s not easy to be happy when the only thing on your mind is what you’ve left behind. I suppose I’m that kind of person, “condemned to wallow in the past and obsess about the future”, except for the future part. Anyway, can’t you have a bit of both? Like, live in the present, and at the same time, remember the past and wonder what will come after this moment… but not in an obsessive way. Surely someone else (before me) must have thought of that “50/50 happy and meaningful life” formula.

There it goes, all the theory. Now, why is it so hard to make it practical? My brain ignores me.

(PS: I already feel the craving… addicted to Heroes, I need my dose!!)

Very deep I thought your post would be all giggles! Hehee Well not long to wait till the next episode of heroes (the 23rd I do believe). I don’t believe for one second that you’ll forget English you can speak and write it so much better than me and it’s my first language. I wish I could understand Spanish so I could write you more comments but it looks like you’ll just have to write more in English for thick people like me to enjoy!!! x

    Wow, good english!

I think it’s very hard, if not impossible to find that 50/50 place. You either think too much, or you don’t think at all. Besides I don’t think you’re truly happy if you live for the present and nothing more, life without meaning isn’t worth very much and happiness tends to be an illusion.

You’ve got a point there, Hermann. As I said, the 50/50 situation is only theoretical. So, I agree, it’s so hard, it could even be impossible. But still… I gotta keep trying ;)

“happiness tends to be an illusion”… I liked that.

By the way, Alex and Hermann… thanks a lot for your comments! I loooove English, did you notice? :P hehe
