Do chickens have ears?? Enero 3, 2008

A few minutes ago, I was just talking to my friend Alex about… well, probably nothing, when he said something about hens having ears the same colour as their eggs (white or brown). He showed me the site where he had read it (here), and it said:

.

Chickens do have ears, but they are more like ear holes. They do not possess an outer ear, or pinna, as most mammals possess, but they do have ear lobes. The color of the lobe does somewhat indicate the color of their eggs. It is believed that the same gene that determines the color of the ear lobe also determines egg color.

An all white chicken has white ear lobes therefore, white hens will lay white eggs. A non-specific breed of broiler hen can be one of many colors or multi-colored. Their ear lobes also can be colored from near white to near black. These birds will lay eggs that are nearly white to a deep, soft brown. The shade of brown of the egg will be indicated by the degree of color of the ear lobe. In other words, a chicken with blackish lobes will not lay a black egg, but it may be a deep brown.”

.

Weird, but interesting, isn’t it??? Now don’t go catching chickens just to look at their ears, I’ve seen loads of them, and I never noticed they had any!! Besides, it might only happen in England (everyone’s crazy over there).

PS: My chicken-like-coffee-machine is black, and so is the coffee it makes… what if I had bought the red one? Would it be giving me WINE??? I’d better go back and ask!!

    hmmm … interesante …

    humm… wine machine… hummm

Ummm…checking the link you’ve given I see that it’s from MadSci (I didn’t know that web but it seems interesting)which surely stands for Mad Science. That’s what you are: mad, completely mad xD
I’ve never seen a hen close enough to check ear lobes. Anyway, the idea of blackish lob = deep brown egg is curious.
By the way, if your uber-coffee-machine had been red, it would have given a bloodish liquid for sure, not wine xDD

P.S. Why is the post written in English? Wait, I think you told me that your friend Alex was English, is it right?

  4. AccentLess Says:

    not wine?!?… :,(

  5. Aidich Says:

I thought of it being something like blood, but I found it pretty nasty. I also imagined cherry sauce, strawberry jam, ketchup… okay, I think I’m hungry.

AccentLess, ignore keiboll, it must definitely give wine!! I still haven’t asked though, but if we believe that ear-egg theory… why not mine too??? :)

  9. Keiboll Says:

    Jurl, Jurl… piltrafilla = little-piltrafed-one
